7 Best Car Insurance Companies in MA
Car insurance may be a requirement in MA, but that’s because it actually is important!
Car insurance provides critical liability and damage protection for you and your vehicle. But it comes in all sorts of varieties, and some plans provide better protection than others. So if you have no choice but to pay for an auto insurance policy, you might as well make sure you’re paying for a comprehensive policy that is actually adequately protecting you.
But without professional insurance training, how are you supposed to know what exactly makes a high-quality insurance policy? How do you know which carrier to trust?
Forget the formal insurance training, this is what we live for! At Berry Insurance, we help thousands of MA residents get the right car insurance policy, and we work with several personal insurance carriers (some of which are highlighted in this article.) So we know a lot about what makes a thorough auto policy and a good insurance company.
Below, we’ll go over seven of our favorite car insurance carriers, in no particular order.
1. Safety Insurance
Founded in 1979, Safety Insurance provides excellent service to individuals and families throughout Massachusetts.
According to their website, since they were founded they have had a “belief that we would succeed as a company if customers were given the best possible service.”
To provide that level of service, they consistently offer great auto coverage at a great price.
And they certainly live up to their name. Safety Insurance prioritizes the safety of its clients through a partnership with the driver training and education center, In Control Family Foundation.
“This partnership will help educate teens and drivers of all ages about safe driving practices, and encourage participation in advanced driver skills development programs to reduce the number of accidents on our state’s roads,” according to Safety’s website.
Those who participate in the program even become eligible for a discount on their auto insurance through Safety!
We also love that Safety Insurance gives back to the community through The Safety Insurance Charitable Foundation and an employee gift matching program.
Safety has an A (Excellent) rating for financial strength from AM Best Company.
2. Plymouth Rock Assurance
The next on our list, Plymouth Rock Assurance has been providing personal insurance to the community since 1982.
On their website, they say “delivering insurance with kindness and humanity is still our job. It means genuinely caring about our customers, treating you like more than just a policy number and partnering with local insurance experts right in your neighborhood to help you navigate the complex world of insurance.”
They also say they are committed to saving clients money and claim that drivers could save over $645 by switching to Plymouth Rock.
To achieve this, they provide many discounts, including Road Rewards, Plymouth Rock’s safe driving program. By allowing an app to use telematics to track driving habits, it rewards policyholders for safe driving.
Through the Plymouth Rock Assurance Foundation, and an employee matching program, Plymouth Rock actively gives back to the community.
We also love Plymouth Rock’s Resources Page, which provides clients with helpful resources about their insurance and risk management.
Plymouth Rock has an A (Excellent) rating for financial strength from AM Best Company.
3. USAA
Founded in 1922, The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) provides auto insurance to people across the county, including United States Service members through custom military plans.
Their website says their members save $725 on average on their annual premium when they switched to USAA. This is partially due to their extensive discount opportunities for things such as safe driving, defensive driving courses, new vehicles, low mileage, vehicle storage, length of membership, and more.
They also have a handy mobile app where members can manage their policy, get car insurance quotes, request auto ID cards and more.
4. Safeco
Founded in 1923, Safeco Insurance is a part of Liberty Mutual Insurance, a Fortune 100 company and the sixth-largest personal lines insurer in the country.
As an independent insurance agency, we love that in addition to just providing comprehensive auto insurance policies to Massachusetts residents, Safeco also values relationships with independent agents. In fact, they sell their products and services exclusively through independent agents. This means they care that their clients get matched with the right policy for them and have a great customer service experience.
5. The Norfolk & Dedham Group
The oldest carrier on the list, The Norfolk & Dedham Group has been serving the community since 1825.
And we think being a member of the community for 200 years says a lot about a company’s reputation.
“As a locally grown insurance company, we know the region, know the risks, and know the right coverage,” they say on their website.
They also claim “our expert agents are available to help you create a personalized auto plan that meets your needs. We offer a range of protections and coverage, in addition to money saving discounts.”
Their online reviews praise an easy and informative claims process. They also have an A (Excellent) rating for financial strength and long-term issuer credit from AM Best Company.
Norfolk & Dedham also offers discounts up to 30% for safe drivers through telematics. Learn more about their offered discounts, as well as other ways to save on your auto policy, in this helpful guide:13 Ways to Save On Your Auto Insurance.

Amica Insurance is a Rhode Island based insurance company offering personal insurance to individuals and families across the country and is a reputable carrier in the area.
Founded in 1907, Amica is the oldest mutual insurer of automobiles in America and today have a base of satisfied customers.
In fact, 95% of Amica customers stay with Amica and they have an A+ (Superior) rating for financial strength and claims payment ability from AM Best Company.

Arbella Insurance, headquartered in Quincy, MA has been providing insurance to the region since 1988.
Arbella claims “being local helps us deliver superior, personalized claim service to all of our customers. Arbella is the only regional insurance carrier with six claim offices in New England—ensuring that when you need us, we are there for you.”
They also offer comprehensive auto packages to customers, with unique endorsements such as a pet endorsement which “provides up to $500 in veterinary fees in the event of an injury to your cat or dog while in your car during an accident,” and a personal property package that “provides coverage for personal belongings that are in your car during an accident, such as PDAs (up to $200), laptops (up to $1,000), and $250 for child car seats.”
We also love their passion for community service. According to their website, “Since 2005, the Arbella Insurance Foundation has been committed to supporting local, non profit organizations that work hard to positively impact the lives of the people of New England. We are proud to be recognized as a top corporate giver in Massachusetts and strive every day to help our neighbors in need.”
