cyber and data breach protection
Safeguard your business from online attacks and data breaches with cyber liability insurance
Both small businesses and multi-million dollar organizations are just as appealing/at risk to hackers
What is cyber liability insurance?
Cyber liability insurance will protect your business from the financial loss of a cyber attack. It provides coverage for legal services and defense costs, notification expenses, forensic analysis, regulatory compliance and fines, lost income, and recovery of lost files.
First-party cyber coverage is automatically included, and will cover the costs associated with an attack on your computer systems or network. For example, you get hacked but it appears that none of your client’s data was compromised. You are still required to notify your clients of the attack, which comes at a significant cost.
Additional cyber liability coverages you may need
Two types of additional coverage are available with cyber liability insurance. Not every insurance policy comes with both, so it’s important to know what your risk is and what your policy will cover, before you buy.
Surprising cyber statistics
When it comes to your business data, you can never be too cautious. Making sure you have the right insurance protection can prevent your business from becoming a statistic too.
What is (and is not) covered by cyber liability insurance?
Cyber liability insurance and data breach insurance won’t cover every type of claim. Each policy has limitations, exclusions, and optional coverages you’ll want to know about before you get your computer systems up and running.
What is typically covered?
Notifications expenses for your clients or vendors impacted
Public relations support
Credit monitoring services for victims
Lost income replacement
Extortion or ransom coverage
Legal services and defense costs
Forensic analysis
Regulatory compliance and fines
Recovery of lost files
What is not typically covered?
Liability for bodily injuries or property damages to others
Damages to your business or personal property
Employee work-related illness or injuries
Claims made against you by your employees
Mistakes from your professional services or advice
Fraud, robbery, or employee theft
Damages resulting from negligent security practices
Got cyber liability insurance questions? We’ve got answers.
Cyber liability insurance is one of the most complicated policies you’ll ever buy. We know you’ve got more questions, so let’s get started with the basics.
Do I need cyber liability insurance if I already have a general liability insurance policy?
Yes. Your general liability policy will not provide coverage for cyber attacks or data breaches.
Do I really need cyber liability insurance?
Most likely, yes. Let’s face it, we live in a technology-driven word. If you use any form of technology to support your business operations, you should consider cyber liability coverage.
But if you still aren’t convinced, here are some questions to consider:
- Do you collect, store, or send any personal or confidential data? (See Massachusetts regulations regarding the standards of protection of personal identifiable information or PII.)
- Do you accept electronic payments, either directly or through a third party vendor or service?
- Are you in an industry that has regulations regarding your customer data?
- Do your employees have access to any customer data?
- Do your employees access company software or systems using a laptop, smartphone, or other electronic device?
- Do you have a WiFi network or allow access to your systems remotely?
- Do you use any cloud-based storage?
If you answered yes to any of the above, you're likely at risk for a hacker or data breach, and cyber liability coverage is the only insurance that will make sure you're covered from any damage that could result from it.
How much does cyber liability insurance cost?
It depends.
The cost of your cyber security insurance protection will depend on a variety of factors, including your business type, industry, years in business, gross revenues, number of employees, number of customers, type of data you store, your data protection and risk management techniques, coverage limits, existing or prior insurance coverages, and more.
Here’s something to consider - how much will it cost if you’re the victim of an attack and you don’t have cyber liability insurance?
What can I do to prevent an attack?
This is a great question! Preventing an attack is far better than having one.
The first step you should take is to create a cyber security planning guide for your business. In this plan, you should detail your prevention methods and response plans.
Your prevention methods should enforce data backup measures, proper password maintenance, employee training, and other security protocols. Your response plan should identify how your business will notify your customers of an attack, what your public statement will be, and how you will work to restore the data and prevent future attacks from occurring. Keep in mind, even with all the right preparation, it's not always enough, and that's why this coverage is so essential.
How cyber insurance keeps your systems, data, and reputation safe
A firewall and virus software simply aren’t enough today. Cyber liability insurance will pick up where your IT security practices leave off.
Coverage for many types of attacks
An attack can happen from a hacker, a data breach, data loss, denial of service attack, malware, viruses, phishing emails, and more. Get coverage no matter how the attack happens to you.
Recovery and restoration of data
You stored that data for a reason - to run your business. Without it, you could be lost. The right policy will help you recover and restore your most valuable asset.
Notification services
When your system is hacked, you are responsible for notifying anyone that could be impacted. This notification could be extremely costly depending on the size of the breach.
Public relations support
A breach can cripple your firm’s reputation. You’ll be provided with public relations responses and support, as well as credit monitoring services to the victims of the attack, keeping your goodwill intact.
